Keep your family and home safe over the holidays.

The holidays are one of the busiest times of the year. From parties to shopping trips, our calendars fill up quickly. And we're not the only ones. Burglars find carefully wrapped presents full of easy to sell items like jewelry and electronics hard to resist, making the holidays one of the most likely times for a home break-in. With a few tips, you can ensure that your gifts end up in the right hands.

 Don’t Advertise That You’re Away:

  • Thieves have gone high tech, using social media sites to find their next target.  Always be mindful of what information you share on online. Don’t publicize your travel plans by posting that you’ll be away on Facebook or to people you don’t know well.

  • Don’t post pictures of your trip while you’re away from home. Wait until you’re back home to share your memories.

Check the Doors:

  • Secure all doors and windows each time you leave the house, at all hours of the day. Most home burglaries actually occur between the hours of 10am and 3pm when residents are out and about.

  • If you normally have a hidden key, consider giving it to a trusted neighbor during the holiday season.

  • Instead of running extension cords through a window for outdoor holiday lighting, install an exterior outlet for this purpose.

Hide the Goods:

  • Keep any packages or wrapped presents in closets or away from exterior windows and doors.

  • If you celebrate Christmas, don't display your tree with presents beneath it in a front window.

  • After the festivities, rethink leaving boxes for things like expensive electronics on the curb. Break them down so they will fit inside your trash or recycling bin.

Keep Things Bright:

  • While you're putting up your holiday lights, be sure to check all exterior lighting and replace burned out bulbs.

  • Leave a few lights on inside when you're away for the evening, especially if you'll be gone overnight.

  • Consider installing extra flood lighting or motion-sensor lighting that will alert you to activity outside your home at night.

Use Your Alarm:

  • Burglars are less likely to break into a home with a security system. To this end, make sure you have a security system warning sign in your yard or on your window.

  • Test and correct any system malfunctions before you start bringing home packages.
